About Eira Hammond, Managing Director
Eira Hammond formed Eira Consulting Limited in October 2009 after working for 25 years in the payroll and HR profession in a variety of roles and companies. The motive behind the business is to work with organisations to improve not only the services they provide but to support the individual staff in learning how to continue making improvements and working on projects. This is a unique approach as consultants are often recruited to perform a particular task or project with no remit to pass on their knowledge during the process which often requires the organisation to employ a consultant again in future to perform the same or similar function.
Having worked in many organisations, Eira realised that there are many payroll and HR individuals that have no experience or exposure to the wider profession, limiting their ability to see or think outside the box. Eira wants to be able to make a difference to those individuals and organisations, supporting them to be self sufficient and give them the confidence to keep looking at what they do, reviewing processes regularly and always strive to provide an excellent service to their customers.
In 1990 Eira joined Cyborg Systems, a payroll and HR software supplier, initially as a Support Consultant, but quickly moving through the organisation in a variety of roles including Support Desk Manager, looking after 17 Support Consultants who looked after over 100 customers solving queries in payroll, HR, Pensions, T&A and IT. Cyborg changed ownership several times during the 16 years she was employed, with both Meta4, Cyborg Inc and Hewitt Associates as owners. When Eira commenced her role as Payroll & HR Consultant in early 2000 she worked with customers across the UK and Ireland, later specialising in Irish Payroll Legislation. Customers Eira worked with were in a varety of sectors including retail, Local Government, Police & Fire, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Aerospace, Oil and Gas, Railways, Financial Services and Water.
In 2002 Eira passed the IPP (Institute of Payroll Professionals) Diploma in Payroll Management. Enjoying the studies so much Eira decided to give something back to the institute and the payroll profession by becoming a tutor for the diploma. Tutoring involves preparing and leading tutorials and module review days, and giving practical help and guidance to students in all aspects of day to day payroll legislation and management throughout the 2/3 year course of their studies.
Eira regularly writes articles for the payroll specialist press with the most recent articles looking in detail at TUPE and the associated pitfalls and concerns a payroll or HR manager might have throughout the process. She also is a regular speaker at conferences and other national events for the IPP and other professional organisations on a variety of topics covering both HR and Payroll.
Eira saw the opportunity for a new challenge in 2006 when she joined HBS as Head of Payroll and HR Administration. She managed a team of 65 payroll and HR operational staff looking after customers including Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire County Councils. Eira was brought in to expand the business and develop the service offering to new customers, improving service delivery and transformating the tradition ex-council culture of the staff to a profitable and professional outsourcing team. HBS was bought by Mouchel in 2007 and Eira continued to grow the payroll business, adding Universities, Police and Schools to the rapidly growing portfolio of customers. On leaving Mouchel in July 2009, Eira's team had increased to 105 staff and she had enabled the management team to be self sufficient and fully equipped to continue developing themselves and their staff.
In 2007 Eira was presented with the high accolade of 'Manager of the Year' from the IPP having been nominated by her employer with testimonials from several customers and employees.
Eira was elected Non Executive Director of the IPP in November 2008, along with the other board members and CEO, Eira is responsible for establishing strategy, monitoring plans and achievement of objectives.
